![]() Relax, control, relax, control...isn't life so often a combination of these opposite impulses? In my belly-dancing classes each week, (so much fun!) one of my instructors talks about muscle control, and the other focuses on relaxing into the moves and just letting your body MOVE. As if it weren't hard enough to remember all the layers of the dance (feet, hips, belly, hands, arms, head, music) this information really confused me for a long time! Which is it!?! Relax, or control? After years of working on this conundrum, I've finally begun to figure out the balance between the two. My shimmy, and the rest of my life, has never looked better. I'm a bit of a control freak, see, and it's only in my (snicker) adulthood that I've begun to see the damage that can do to my peace of mind, and to the relationships I value. I still blush when I think about the time I took the knife from someone who was helping me cook and "showed" them how to do it. At least I can say now that if someone is good enough to offer to help me in the kitchen, I let them do something that's self-explanatory enough that I don't need input. Dreams are the windows to the soul. Maybe this is true, maybe it isn't, but I do believe our dreams can tell us some very important things about our lives. Especially for this season's hot new trends in jewelry (think big hoops or beaded gypsy-style earrings, bold necklaces), the time is right to explore the world of estate pieces. We're not talking the box-of-junk style stuff you find at the garage sale around the corner, or even the glass-topped boxes of rhinestone goodies you |
find at the flea-market (though these can be great sources for the girl on a budget). Estate jewelry is any jewelry that happens to have been owned before; it can be really high-quality stuff. Buying and collecting it--especially right now--can help you stay on the cutting edge of style, because there is such variety to be found! I was recently in a store on Newbury Street in Boston and saw a bejeweled grouse-foot (for holding up that shoulder-part of the Scottish kilt--who knew?) among the other gorgeous antique pieces. Being the antique lover that I am, this is definitely a habit I'm going to pursue. For advice about how to shop, check out this article. B.
