Somewhere inside most of us is a low-maintenance girl. For several years in college and just after, I wore my hair all one length, drip-dry, virtually the same every day. I think it must have been a response to the over-coiffed majority in Texas, where I was going to school. Everything changed when I got a really great cut--one that could actually be called a hair STYLE. I felt like my hair was attention-getting, in a good way. It took--still takes--a certain amount of effort with the hair-dryer and the round brush to get my hair in order, which I don't mind. It's a kind of a ritual. The only trouble is the things we do to make ourselves look great can hurt our lovely locks--frequent trims are a must for me, as are products that take good care of it. Philosophy makes a great protectant, the sole purpose of which is to help protect your hair from the damage you do--since it's formulated just for fine hair, you won't have to worry that it'll weigh you down. --B.B. beautyjungle.com - Philosophy the Big Blow Off
I know, I know, sex ed class (or even Human Sexuality in college) was a long time ago. And the beauty articles are more interesting than the "Be Afraid, Be Very Very Afraid" articles in your favorite print mag, anyway. Well, ladies, I'm here to tell you that you're in for some re-education. Sex can be great, but it can also be riskier than you'd imagine. And knowing the last name of the guy you slept with isn't going to keep you from getting his diseases--it may help you find him to kick his butt, but you're still left with the damage. Not all sexually transmitted diseases are easy to spot right away, and since some symptoms mimic other problems, you may be tempted to dismiss them. Don't. Consequences can be huge. Read this article to find out more about one stealthy disease that is robbing young women of the ability to bear children. I'll admit it. I have uncontrollable splurge-urges on a too-frequent basis. I can't walk into a mall without spending unplanned dollars. The only thing that keeps me from going bankrupt is the fact that most of my urges are comparatively low-budget...so far. One of my worst indulgences is makeup. The practical girl in me screams "Don't spend $20 for a lipstick! It's made at the same factory as the cheap stuff, with the SAME INGREDIENTS!!" But the spendthrift in me usually slugs Miss Practical and says "Ooooh...look at all the pretty colors!", and I end up totally sucked in by the sales pitch. If you know you just can't resist yourself sometimes, I recommend this kind of splurging. You'll look great, and you might diffuse your urge to buy something you can afford even less. Proof: Though I look at it EVERY TIME I go shopping, I still haven't bought the ridiculously expensive handbag I've wanted for years - I just drool over it, then shuffle off to my favorite makeup counter and console myself with an eye shadow. Tai Chi has become a very popular way to exercise, but it is much more than that, it is a method of combining mind, body and soul into one. The fluid movements of Tai Chi can create a sense of power and calm that has been used since ancient China to meditate and bring balance to one's life. --A.T. Tai Chi
