Smell is linked to taste. That's why your mother always told you to pinch your nose if you had to drink some nasty medicine. That's why hot food is so appealing: steam helps release the scent of the food into the air, so you smell it better. The subject of the longer article in this issue is scent--perfume, to be exact. There is such a huge variety of commercially produced scents available today, that we should have no trouble smelling unique. To help you along towards that goal, I'm recommending a line of perfume that should be rare enough to set you apart, at least for a little longer, 'til your friends catch up. If you have any great sites to recommend or comments on what you would like to see in this newsletter, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,

One of the hottest new spa treatments is a water therapy called Watsu. What exactly does that mean? Imagine yourself floating in a pool of warm, soothing water. It is said that this massage technique can transport you into a completely new plane of relaxation, awareness and peace. --A.T.

Everyone wants to smell good. Carefully used, scent on a person can be as distinctive, as evocative, as the voice itself. Drakkar Noir will always bring back my first boyfriend, or rather, his brother. He used to snitch the bottle when we had a date, because he knew I loved it. Fragrances that trigger memories of women are equally as potent: Paloma Picasso's fragrance is my Senior-Year English teacher, always impeccably put-together. Probably more for women, scent is an important accessory. I have one friend that spent the early years of her career in fragrances. To her, daily fragrance is as essential as shoes.

The problem I've always had is, some scents, especially commercial perfumes, become so common that you get lost in a sea of others who smell just like you, and you've lost one of the main purposes of wearing scent in the first place! I remember how irritated I was when the Body Shop Dewberry scent, which I fell in love with before anyone I knew, suddenly became EVERYONE's favorite thing.

Fragrances today help you out in that department: descriptions of a whole new breed of botanical-based scents no longer read like romance novels ("sweet romance, sensual warmth, oriental spice..." which means what, exactly?), but include instead names of the actual essences they're meant to capture. I mean, what was Dior's Poison ever supposed to smell like?

One line of distinctive, beautiful scents that are actually (for the most part) decipherable is Fresh Inc.'s Transparent Florals. Honeysuckle Grapefruit smells, remarkably, like honeysuckle and grapefruit! Where to get them? At least for now, they're hard enough to find that you'll stand out with any of these great scents. If you can't find these scents at your local Neiman-Marcus, try buying direct from the source. --B.B.

I'm so very sad to have to miss a girly-reunion this fall in California. A bunch of my friends are getting together from all over the country just for the sake of being together. I just don't have the time to go! Aside from not seeing my girls, I'm missing out on a great gift-op. One
click to enlarge of my smartest, best-thinking girlfriends came up with the brilliant idea of bringing a little something for everyone in attendance - something they love to use, whether it's a beauty product or a great book. That way everyone will leave with a kit of goodies. Isn't that a great idea? Why not try it for your next girls-only occasion? Why not make up an occasion for the express purpose of trading the goodies? Maybe you can bring a couple of your must-have nail polish colors, or a luxurious bath treatment. Still stuck for ideas? Try this assortment of candles - there's one sure to smell great in every room in your place.
